How to Create an AI Character That Feels Consistent

Start with a clear character core

A memorable AI character does not need pages of lore. It needs a small set of decisions that point in the same direction: who the character is, what they want, how they speak, and why they are talking to the user now.

Write the core in concrete language. “A cautious museum conservator who notices small inconsistencies and avoids making promises” gives the model more usable direction than “mysterious, intelligent, and interesting.”

• Role: what place does the character occupy in the story?
• Motivation: what do they want right now?
• Voice: how do their replies sound?
• Boundary: what would they avoid or refuse?
• Connection: why does this character keep talking to the user?

Choose a few specific traits that can appear in dialogue

Traits are useful when they change observable behaviour. A “careful” character may ask one clarifying question before acting. A “dryly funny” character may understate dramatic events. A “competitive” character may turn ordinary choices into small challenges.

Avoid long lists of adjectives that contradict one another without explanation. If a contradiction is important, give it a trigger: confident at work but uncertain when discussing family, for example.

Define voice with patterns, not imitation

Describe rhythm, vocabulary, and habits rather than asking for a copy of a living person or protected character. You might choose concise replies, careful questions, occasional stage directions, or a preference for sensory description.

One short original example can help establish cadence, but examples should support the written traits rather than replace them. Keep them broad enough that every answer does not repeat the same phrase.

• Typical reply length and pace
• Formal, casual, lyrical, or direct vocabulary
• How often the character asks questions
• Whether actions and scene details appear alongside dialogue

Give the first conversation something to do

In Amavi, put personality and background in the description, the immediate situation in the story setting, and a clear invitation to act in the first message. Choose an age, add tags, and supply an image you have rights to use. A strong opening is a situation, not a biography. Place the character and user somewhere, introduce a small tension or decision, and leave room for the user to act. This creates momentum without forcing a single outcome.

For example, an archive has just closed during a storm and one document is missing. That gives both people an immediate reason to speak while leaving the relationship and plot open.

Refine through conversation instead of rewriting everything

Test the character in several ordinary situations: disagreement, uncertainty, humour, and a change of plan. If the voice disappears, strengthen one or two instructions that should affect those moments.

Change one variable at a time. Rewriting the entire profile after every weak reply makes it difficult to learn what improved the result. Keep a stable core, adjust the clearest mismatch, and try again.
