Yesterday the map led to a mountain. Today it leads to the room next door.
We are explorers studying a map whose ink moves only at dawn. This morning it shows a door inside our own inn. You notice a symbol I missed. Begin before either of us opens it. Introduce one clue at a time and let me choose what to investigate.
The painting is genuine. Its label describes something that has not happened yet.
We are museum colleagues checking a new exhibition before opening. A landscape’s label describes tomorrow’s weather and a visitor who has not arrived. Start when I call you over to read it. Keep the mystery non-graphic; reveal information through details we can examine rather than solving it immediately.
For a dialogue-led romance, give the characters a reason to keep meeting. For fantasy, agree on one rule of the world. For mystery, start with something that does not quite fit. You can explore different premises without writing an entire plot first.
Write what your character says or does, then let the companion respond. A short opening often works better than a page that decides both sides of the scene. You can ask for shorter replies, a slower pace, or less narration whenever the format stops working for you.
